Chapter Eight

I nearly, quite intentionally, gave Nicolassa a chance to punish me for the cat ears, but I decided instead to behave. I wore them every day, and every day, she changed them. I wore several different types of cat ears, Minnie Mouse ears, and bunny ears. The bunny ears came with a fluffy tail.

Stef and I had our date. It was sweet and lovely. She stayed the night. That was also sweet and lovely. In the morning, we talked. I was young and just figuring things out. She wasn’t ready to settle to one person. We decided we’d continue to play as we had, but it would remain casual. I was fine with that, and I think she was, too.

I made progress on the bookkeeping. It was taking time, but I brought the current status under control. I talked to every single known vendor and got copies of all receipts dating back three years. We sent flower arrangements to each of their accounting departments.

In the casino, I saw people, men and women both, spin the Wheel of Fortune. Half won chips. Half won punishments. No one asked me to paddle her. One man asked to be leashed to me, but I flat out said, “I’m sorry, but no. I work in the back office, and I can’t take you there.”

I saw women – no men – wearing the weird masks, and then one day, I saw a woman spin and land on Mask. Security took her away. I looked for her later, finding her kneeling in the casino, the mask in place.

For a long time, I didn’t hear from Cate, and I thought maybe she’d moved beyond me. I was a little disappointed, but I understood. But then one Wednesday evening, Esme stopped up. I hadn’t ordered anything, and I was surprised to see her. “There’s someone in the lounge asking for you.”

I followed her down. Cate had a table, and there was already a soft drink waiting for me. Normally, I wouldn’t trust something like that, but I knew I was safe here. Even if she managed to drug me, no one would let her take me anywhere.

I smiled, kissed her cheek, and sat down opposite her. “How are you, Cate?”

“Good,” she said. “Work got crazy, but we have a breather now. I’m sorry I haven’t been here.”

“I understand about work.”

We chatted for a few minutes, and then she asked, “Are you still Madam Shira sometimes?”

“I wasn’t for a while, but if you’d been here last night, you’d have seen her.”

“I’d like a date with Madam Shira,” she said.

“I’d like that, Cate. Did you mean now?”

“No, but I wanted to ask in person.”

I smiled. “I appreciate that. I want you to arrange it through Nicolassa. I’m here every night except Sunday, although I could come in.”

“I’m not going to ask you to give up your one day off,” she said. “Tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow would be lovely.”

“Could we start with dinner?”

“Also lovely.”

She took my hands. “I can’t stop thinking about you, Madam Shira.
